We use systems thinking to deliver better solutions.
How do we do things?
We have adopted systems thinking as our conceptual framework. At its core, systems thinking is an holistic approach which acts to unite various disciplines such as the physical and social sciences, engineering and management. Importantly, it arms us with both a mindset and a broad array of practical tools that we can apply to provide clients with adaptive, enduring and often counter-intuitive solutions.
Why do we do things differently?
Traditional analysis, planning and problem solving methods don’t work. They attempt to look at the current environment and predict results using a linear approach. This ignores the reality that businesses exist in an increasingly dynamic setting with constant and complex interactions between people, processes and systems. As a consequence, the implemented solutions often fail, make the problem worse or create new problems.
We acknowledge that this growing complexity means that there are no definitive or formulaic answers. To improve our decision-making we must recognise the underlying structure, issues and interdependencies to gain a deep understanding of the problem we are trying to solve. Only then can we develop useful insights to deliver simple, thoughtful solutions. The systems thinking toolset allows us to achieve this by “seeing both the forest and the trees”.
Why doesn’t everyone do what we do?
Because it’s difficult. It requires a grasp of different mental models, continual learning and recognition that there are no one-size fits all solutions. It also requires dedication and practice to ensure it results in more than a vague set of qualitative tools and unreliable generalisations. This is why traditional analysts and management consultants package up solutions based on one or two tools no matter what type of problem they face; think Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen. For these reasons, our business model is purposefully oriented to establishing longer term partnerships rather than one-off engagements where we promise to fix everything and then fail to deliver. In the short term, it’s certainly not as profitable but in the long run, it’s way more satisfying.
